The SCBP Doula Team
The SCBP doulas come from a wide range of backgrounds, including midwives and other healthcare professionals in their home countries. Many remain actively involved in their communities and also work privately as doulas, providing both birth and, in some cases, postpartum support. Others are healthcare workers, childbirth educators, yoga and CPR instructors, body workers, or facilitators of community support groups.
You will meet your doula once during pregnancy, usually around 35 weeks. Doula support includes one prenatal visit, support during labour and birth, and one postpartum visit.
Our doulas are fully integrated into the hospital environment, moving seamlessly alongside you throughout your birth experience. They are not outsiders; they are recognized members of our care team. Their presence strengthens everything we do, and we truly consider them indispensable. We could not imagine our program without them.
Some of our doulas have attended more than 1,000 births and have been with the program since it opened in 2004.
Our international doulas
We make every effort to match you with a doula who speaks your first language. Many of our doulas are immigrants to Canada, and all are committed to supporting new immigrants in many different capacities.
In addition to English, our doulas currently speak Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Punjabi, Japanese, Ukrainian, Russian, and Tagalog.
South Community doula program mentors
After completing an approved doula training, doulas applying to join the South Community Birth Program participate in an interview process and orientation. They are also required to attend births alongside our SCBP mentors.
Our mentors have been part of our team for more than 15 years, and some who have been with us since the beginning have collectively attended thousands of births. Many of our early mentors continue to provide doula care at SCBP, while some of their former mentees have now become mentors themselves, a wonderful reflection of the growth and continuity within our doula program.
Once their mentorship period is completed, typically after attending three to five births, doulas begin receiving their own client assignments within SCBP. The mentoring program is designed exclusively for new doulas joining the SCBP team and is not offered as a stand-alone program
